When considering controllers, Modicon’s open operating standards set the standard for accessibility

In a recent article in the April 1, edition of Control Engineering, vendors and System Integrators weighed in on proprietary, PC - based operating systems vs. open operating systems in PLCs. And, while there was much debate, and multiple perspectives offered on both sides of the issue, one thing was apparent. Schneider Electric’s Modicon programming environment is one of the few, open programming platforms for PLCs in the Automation marketplace.
Open programming standards mean more accessibility to different systems, more compatibility with standard applications, and more portability to different installations. Systems Integrator Don Kiser of Optimation Technology, Inc commented about Schneider Electric’s Modicon technology. “They have chosen to make their protocols public, and have allowed the public to develop their own tools. If you search for SCADA and Linux, you won't find anything that will talk to an Allen-Bradley PLC or Siemens PLC; however, you will find Modicon”, Kiser adds.
