Reader Question of the Month:
Application Tip:
Thanks to Michael R in Tomah Wisconsin for this month’s question - What is the most efficient way to exchange the air inside of the control panel? I feel that forced air out (negative enclosure pressure) is the most efficient. While others have said that forced air in (positive pressure) is more efficient.
Michael we spoke with several authorities about your question and we discovered that most agree with you - negative pressure is the most efficient. This technique allows you to remove warm air and draw in cool air. However, there is no guarantee that the cool air is being filtered which can allow dust or other contaminates into the panel. While dust and contaminates do not directly reduce efficiency they can increase the risk of downtime, increase cost associated with repair and countless man hours for troubleshooting.
This leads us to positive pressure. With positive pressure and proper filtration you can eliminate external contaminates but there is no guarantee that air is moving through the entire panel. You can easily plan for and install one or two stirring fans that will facilitate moving air throughout the entire panel.
Ultimately utilizing negative enclosure pressure or positive pressure is a decision you need to base on environmental conditions. Asking the right questions before you begin a project can help you make the right decision and enable you to create the best product for your customer.
Michael, you will receive a Telemecanique T-shirt in the next few weeks!
