| Interchangeable Breakers? | |||||
|
Many manufacturers claim that their circuit breakers are interchangeable and may be directly substituted for other brands of circuit breakers. In reality, interchangeable circuit breakers do not exist. While it may be possible to install an interchangeable circuit breaker, chances are that the breaker will not fit the exact way in the load center as the original was intended. The electrical connection between the breaker and the panel is one of the most critical entities of system testing. An improper connection can have serious consequences and could lead to a major disaster. Besides an increased safety hazard, other risks include reduced performance, increased liability, and loss of warranty protection. Interchangeable circuit breakers can be purchased to save a dollar or two, but one needs to contemplate if it is worth the risk to their home and family. In order to assure safety to your home and family, you should always purchase the correct circuit breaker for the load center, consider only the load center wiring diagram when selecting circuit breakers, and follow the NEC which contains the minimum provisions considered necessary for your electrical system.
